Buddhism in India

p>Buddhism arose in the Gangetic plain in the 5th century BCE with the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. It spread rapidly under royal patronage, above all that of the emperor Ashoka, whose missions carried it across Asia. Great monastic universities such as Nalanda and Vikramashila made India a centre of Buddhist learning for centuries.</p>
