p>Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869–1948) led the Indian independence movement and became the most influential figure of the freedom struggle. Trained as a barrister, he developed his philosophy of <em>satyagraha</em>, or non-violent civil resistance, during two decades of activism in South Africa before returning to India in 1915.</p><p>Through mass campaigns such as Non-Cooperation, the Salt March and Quit India, he mobilized millions across lines of class, region and religion.</p>

Global Influence of Satyagraha

p>Gandhi's methods of non-violent resistance influenced civil-rights and freedom movements worldwide, inspiring leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. Revered in India as the Father of the Nation and 'Bapu', he was assassinated on 30 January 1948.</p><p>His birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti and internationally as the UN International Day of Non-Violence.</p>
