p>The Gupta dynasty (c. 319–550 CE) reunified northern India and presided over what is often called the classical golden age of Indian civilization. Under Samudragupta and Chandragupta II the empire expanded across the subcontinent while patronizing an extraordinary flowering of art, science and Sanskrit literature.</p><p>The period saw the achievements of Aryabhata in astronomy and Kalidasa in poetry, and the maturation of the decimal system with zero.</p>
